The Illinois Archaeological Survey, a society of professional archaeologists dedicated to identifying and preserving archaeological resources in the state of Illinois, is pleased to announce the Jeanette E. Stephens Student Paper Awards. The Survey sponsors separate competitions for both undergraduate and graduate students. We invite all students to submit papers for this competition. The winners of the awards will each receive $100, a certificate signed by the IAS President, and a complete set of the IAS journal Illinois Archaeology (volumes 1-19). In addition, the winning papers will be published on the IAS web page (http://virtual.parkland.edu/IAS/mainmenu.htm). The winner of each of the competitions will also be invited to present his or her paper at the annual conference of the IAS and is encouraged to submit the paper for publication in Illinois Archaeology. All papers must concern Illinois archaeology and entrants must have been enrolled in an accredited academic program for at least one semester of the previous academic year. Submissions should be made to the IAS by August 1 and include both a paper and electronic copy (formatted in Microsoft Word). Please send papers to IAS past-President, Rochelle Lurie, at MARS, Inc., 505 North State Street, Marengo, Illinois 60152.
The archaeological record of Illinois is rich, and we invite all students to become engaged in Illinois archaeology. Archaeological field schools are found in all parts of the state. Students can also get involved by contacting the nearest chapter of the Illinois Association for Advancement of Archaeology (IAAA). Students interested in employment or research opportunities should contact cultural resource firms in their area. September is Illinois Archaeological Awareness Month; watch for events in your area, and consider hosting an event.
Educators please encourage your students to submit a paper for the Jeanette E. Stephens Student Paper Awards and please encourage them to get involved in Illinois archaeology. Visit other areas of the IAS web site for more information on the many archaeological resources available in the state of Illinois.
